Perfect book recommendation to start off the year. The One Thing by Gary Keller.
I remember judging the book before I read it, “An entire book telling me to focus on one thing?” The truth is, I am terrible at focusing on one thing. So I read the book and glad I did. It is a few years old, but a principle worth revisiting as you plan your goals for the year.
For me, an aspiring serial entrepreneur, there are thousands of options, strategies, resources, events and distractions that take my focus. The art of staying focused is a discipline, focusing on the right thing is crucial. That is where The One Thing applies.
I love this question from the book,
“What’s the ONE Thing you can do this week such that by doing it everything else would be easier or unnecessary?”
Such a beautiful first question to better delegate, automate and potentially delete all the “things” that steal our focus. This question can speak to an entire business strategy or the 100 emails you need to crunch through today.
This leads to the next principle which is the Domino Effect. “Every great change starts like falling dominoes.” B J Thornton. What is the ONE Thing that if completed will lead to something great! This brings clarity to this statement from the book, “There can only be one MOST important thing. Many things may be important, but only one can be the most important.”
I love this guy
So what is the MOST important thing that by doing will make all the other things easier or unnecessary? The book goes on to explain what gets in the way of this simple truth. If you struggle with competing priorities, read the book. This time next year, you will be glad you started pushing little dominoes today:).
